In my opinion by winning the challenge you have elevated yourself to #1 not 7th. The challenge is very hard to win and harder to win again. Great job.

Yeah Yeah Yeah.
It was still cool that he was there. I guess we could settle for a 32,999 crowd. Not bad for us folks in the East

RE: Posting Posting Posting

To everyone:
We announced the 600mod 800 stock changes at our banquet and already explained the hood thing. Really we are talking about 1 brand this year (Polaris Gen2) and 1 brand next year (skidoo zx) If you read the rules, as written, it says the belly pan for pro must be from a 2002 or newer (5 years) You can get an edge hood that fits a gen 2 belly and looks really good.
I also recommended to all the EWA drivers that if you are considering change it would be best to change to a current year.
That being said.
How do you explain the concession to a local driver?
Tell the local driver if he or she wants to run in the IWA they need to follow the rules. Any concessions which have happened every year for the past 7 years would be only at the challenge hosting site and for only the visiting drivers. Some examples from the past
Numbers for EWA drivers have not always been black on white or white on black.
IFS appearing was the allowance years ago.
800 IWA stock sleds allowed in 600 Mod last year.
There have never been any requests that would give an unfair advantage.
Bottom line suggestion was that the EWA drivers at least change to an edge hood style. Preferably the IQ. Skidoo guys will need to go Rev next year.
Would you rather turn away a driver willing to travel 20 hours and pay good money to race for the sake of a minor appearence issue for one annual event? In my opinion I would rather see the driver come and race than sit home because the body wasn't 100% correct.
The IWA and EWA have been building a great relationship for many years and yes we talk about rules and changes every year. Next year we are mandating Orange Helmets. Do you think I would turn away an IWA driver because he had yellow? Never.
I guess I have typed enough. I am very passionate about watercross and its direction. We in the EWA have a different dynamic than the IWA and we have almost completely rewritten our rules around the IWA program. That should tell all of you how much we respect and admire your organization. We do still operate differently though and we should (both sides) work together for growth. Come to the EWA in 2010 and we will again show the IWA the hospitality and friendship we have done since the challenge was concieved.

RE: Posting Posting Posting

Mike,
Its called working together. Your stonewall My way or the highway does not get us anywhere. Maybe you should think before you type. We have always made concession on both sides for the past 7 years. We have 80 drivers and a different set of rules. Are you that full of yourself that you can't see the other side? Do you really think you and the IWA are King of waterx? We have dominated the EastWest challenge and put drivers who normally turn left in your final at your world championship every year for the past 5 years. I guess the real question is What are you afraid of? What does it do to your circuit to bend a little for another circuit?
FYI I would hardly consider our equipment as vintage. Our 10 year rule allows for some models you do not but they are just as good looking and better performing than yours.
I will reserve my other comments for a Phone call. Perhaps you Mike Benoy and I could have a conference call. I am more that willing to discuss things off the net to come to a reasonable agreement for ONE RACE. Not for the entire circuit. I hope your opinion does not represent the entire board.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Two things in life are absolute...
1. Women will never understand what it feels like to get kicked in the testicles.
2. Men will never understand the pain of child birth.
I do agree with Jon, we can move on.
I think the EWA needs to pleed it's case with Grantsburg Hockey. Nothing on here will change anything. mailto:info@grantsburgwatercross.com
We will not go the the Hockey assoc. That is not the way we do things. Anything we do is through the IWA Board

Posting Posting Posting

OK I just got back from a week away and I can not believe this is continuing.
Shawn,
The rule was always in place yes, But the 600cc change DID affect many people, including many of the top EWA drivers. As I said to Mike Benoy, who IS the IWA President, I felt that some concession is necessary for EWA drivers that want to run at grantsburg and the challenge. In order to make the sport grow I think this needs to happen. We will work out the details off line as we always have.
For the rest of you
The IWA has been around for a long time. Changing your rules for the sake of change seems to be an annual thing. It really doesn't matter though. Your board obviously feels that by making the sleds look great you will get better sponsors. This may or may not be true. Who cares.
What is really important is, How can we all work together to make this better for everyone? You guys won the challenge for the first time. Do you want to run it again without the best drivers? Do you want to be the best of the bottom or the cream of the crop? If there are no concessions for grantsburg and the challenge, which there have always been, some of the best drivers will not compete. We all agree that we want a professional, well run event right? So lets figure out how to make this work for watercross and quit bickering about what year the sled looks like. The EWA respects the rules of the IWA 100% but we need to introduce a little grey into the mix to insure the future of the sport.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Epping NY had 20,000 spectators... Is this real numbers?
One thing I don't understand about the rule is, 6 year old plastic is taboo but Ski Doo powered Polaris Chassis's in Pro Open are ok... Why doesn't it include the crank case?
No Epping was 33,000 including Todd Palin

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

For the record I think the IWA should publish a list of qualifying equipment That way there is no confusion. I need to give this information to drivers this weekend. Please let me know. I know polaris has the IQ07-09, EDGE04-06, Fusion05-06, IQ Race05-09, What are the other brands?

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Some Polaris guys still have an older pan. If the sled looked like an edge would that be legal? I am not referring to "my old junk" but there are hoods that are called Gen-Edge. The are edge style that fit the older pans. I know It WILL make a difference who comes and who does not.
Guys from the East also don't come to Grantsburg for the money. It costs more to travel there than you could possibly win. I am just taking into account there are alot of really nice looking sleds with "older than 5 year hoods" 4 of our top 5 drivers would not qualify.
Do you all want to race or look pretty??

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

OK,
After racing against one of the IWA stockers in the 600 Mod class I for sure am convinced that the sleds are very equal. Leo was in the pack with some of our fastest 600 mods and went toe to toe. He placed 3rd in the class of 12 EWA drivers. If anyone has any comments of concerns you should talk to Dennis, Kenny, Aaron, and Leo. They are convinced. I look forward to bringing my 600 mod to grantsburg next year!

For the record. Ricky Arbour is still clinching it. I called him a month ago and he did not send it and he was a no show. I would have prefered to give it personally to Aaron. He and the West guys did a great Job.
I would like to personally thank the IWA drivers. I had a blown head gasket and they came to the call and helped me get into my race. Thanks Dennis, Aaron, Kenny and Leo! You guys are awsome.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Mark,
It was a pleasure discussing this with you on the phone at length. There is no doubt that your Ski Doo meets all the rules set by the IWA. My point in the post was that STOCK MEANS STOCK. Not Modified Stock. I guess with your many years experience it is relatively easy for you to make a sled work. You must admit you have alot of knowledge and Talent.
The one problem that I have is that you are the exception not the rule. Skidoo is the only brand that makes a good 800. You also have a ski doo sponsorship and acquired your skidoo cheaper than most of us can. Cat and polaris now have new models that are 800 sleds but these are a $10,000+ machines as well Yami makes no such 800.
Everyone touts that this is supposed to be an entry level cost effective class yet no one can afford to compete against you and the skidoos. I am die hard polaris man and have been for 35 years. I can not in good concience support rules that are not Cross brand friendly. You may as well call this the Ski Doo 800 stock class. With your logic of only allowing current models and stock trail sleds AND 800 cc machines, how can you suggest growth. From my perspective you CAN build or buy a CURRENT LOOKING 600 mod for a lot less than a Stock 800 in every other brand. That is my opinion based on my 12 years experience. Don't take any of my opinions against stock but the logic does not add up. The sport needs growth not stale rules that only meet the rules of a few veterans. Look at who successfuly drives in the stock class and then lets talk again. Maybe everyone can come to a balance that works for everyone. Thats my 2 Cents.

RE: 600 mod/ 800 stock rule

Every pro sled has a functioning front end that at least appears similar to a stock looking front end with Shocks. We don't want to go backwards and look like a solid front end or our old leaf springers.)
Shawn,
I must admit some of the IWA Drivers put a lot of time and money into the appearance of their machines, but to say that some of the risky "functional" suspensions people come up with are "Stock appearing is just ludicrous. I personally have pretty beat up looking sleds that admittedly need an update. Maybe some fresh paint and some new skin are in order after 8 fun years of racing. However, I do feel that the rigid spindle front is a safe proven set up for water that should not be eliminated. I would rather see a rigid front with a spindle than a farm fabricated arm that could break and hurt a driver or god forbid a spectator. Do you really think go cart shocks and 1/2" tubing are the safest thing? If you want to make a stock class MAKE IT 100% STOCK. Seats and all. Then you can call it stock. Stock track, stock ignition, stock shafts, stock skis, stock everything. Then, Maybe is would be a cost effective class. Then MAYBE people could use their trail sleds. You will definitely have a class of sleds that dont handle for Dog Doo. But at least the factories will like it. (NOT!)
As it stands I think you are missing the point. Everyone benefits from relaxing rules. Tech is easier, there is less arguing and the sport is better. If you want to worry about looks fine but look and some of the beat up riveted******on the snowcross track. I think that in general they are the worst looking sleds in racing, only held together by their numerous sponsors decals.
The other point is the sport. THINK BIGGER!! get you head out of the sand and think about the evolution to a common set of rules for everyone so if you want to race anywhere you can. Both sides need to change their tune and I have taken alot of******from veteran drivers because of the changes that have moved the EWA rules to a very similar state to the IWA rules. This was done on purpose and with caution. We reduced our classes to 2 groups and used a round type format which is much like your own. Do we need to make more concessions? YES! but you need to quit think of your own self centered world and understand that a Common set will be the best thing for the sport.
6 years ago Jeff Fischer and I looked at both groups and came up with the challenge format. As rules changed we have insured that on both sides drivers could compete. Today we need to look again because there is a big gap on sled types. Our guys love the 600 MOD because they can compete is 2 classes with one sled. Yes you give up power to the 8 but the 6's handle great. I have a feeling that if your guys could do the same they would. I would bet as far as HP is concerned My LRM mod and Chad Maki's Skidoo stocker have about the same power. I would also be willing to bet that if they (the stockers) have the chance they would be in favor of changing their set up to help the handling.
Anyway, I have known you for a long time and appreciate your comments but I am a little tired of the narrow minded approach and the "We are better" attitude you project. I think the eastern drivers have proven their place among the best in the world and if you really want the IWA to be World Class you would think worldly not locally. There are just as many sleds, drivers, and races in the east that are equal in quality to anything that you do. Lets all figure out how to make it work for the future!
